This Is England
A better than average indie with a strong, thematically driven story but only so-so technical artistry.
The Band Wagon
A decent musical hurt most by its inability to live up to its reputation as a masterpiece.
Heartbreak Ridge
An atypical war movie with a strong central performance and not much else.
League of Legends: Origins
Toothless and devoid of strong storytelling, this documentary watches more like a corporate promotional video than a movie.
Swing Time
This Astaire and Rogers classic is long on musical bits and short on plot, but what it gets right, it gets really really right.
The 39 Steps
An interesting early look at Hitchcock’s developing style that, while still a decent movie, is not without its flaws.
Made
This comedic crime drama is light on all three.
Spider-Man: Far From Home
A respectable entry into the pantheon of Spider Man movies only hindered by its required nods to Marvel’s larger cinematic universe.
Fisherman’s Friends
A harmless and forgettable take on the unlikely success of a unique British music act.
Pitch Black
A bit clunky at times, but otherwise a master class in science fiction filmmaking on a tight budget.
Primary Colors
A compelling roman à clef of the Clinton presidential primary lacking in some narrative, and thematic, polish.
Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé
A concert film masquerading as a music documentary.
